Shaping the Way I Teach

Shaping the Way I Teach

I am an English teacher and I really love to work with my students. I know that  a good teacher always learns new things, every day, to be better and try to look for the way to become the best teacher. That is the reason why  I really want to improve and learn as much as I can because teachers can inspire and do remarkable things if they want to.

I am still studying and attending to teacher training because I think learning is a constant process that will really help me: develop my English skills, strength my weaknesses and make me feel more confident. Now, I have things to consider for my English classes, for example:  motivate my students, provide them  with opportunities to use the language in real situation,  engage them in active learning activities, monitor students learning, and understand the social and emotional needs among others. It is clear for me that I can shape the way that I teach. I have learned from my mistakes and it is time to try different things. I can change the wrong things and keep doing the right ones. I always keep in mind my own slogan: You have the power to do incredible things, just believe it.

  1. These are wonderful thoughts Lisbeth. It's so important for us to know that we can always improve what we do and how we do it.

You wrote, "I have learned from my mistakes and it is time to try different things. I can change the wrong things and keep doing the right ones." I wonder if you can write a lit more about this? What are some of the right things that you want to keep doing? What are some of the mistakes that you want to correct? What are some of the different things that you'd like to try?

You also mention motivating Ss, providing opportunities for them to use language, and engaging Ss in active learning activities. I wonder if you have any ideas for how you might want to accomplish those goals in your classroom. Could you tell me a few ideas?

  2. I am an amateur teacher, but something that I really like to do is to interact with my students: inside and outside of the classroom. I love to go beyond a simple teacher in a class because I feel identify with my students needs, especially when I work in a remote area of my country. These are some of the good things that I would like to keep doing.

Some of the things that I would like to improve or change are: always begin with the end on mind (clear objectives), develop more activities focus on students centered, Have students interacting a little bit more, among others.

The majority of my students come from an indigenous or ethnic group in Panama. Some of them have to spend an hour walking through forest to get school. Most of them, do not live in good conditions(shelter, electricity and water service) They come to school without shoes, sick, and starving. I can spend more minutes describing their situation. The point here is that it is not easy to attend to daily classes, learn a new language (their mother tongue is Gnobe, and they can speak Spanish) under these conditions. As a human being, I have the responsibility and desire to help them to improve because I do not want them quit the school. Empathy, enthusiasm, praise them as a positive reward are some of the ways that I use to motivate my students.
